Maxwell, and honestly, its biggest strength is how obvious it feels once you hear it. Leadership isn&#8217;t handed to you on day one. It&#8217;s earned, one stage at a time. Each one stacks on the last. There&#8217;s no shortcut around it, and honestly, there shouldn&#8217;t be. At Position, people follow you because of your job title. You&#8217;re the manager, the team lead, the one with &#8220;Head of&#8221; in your email signature. That&#8217;s it. That&#8217;s the whole reason.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing wrong with starting there. The trouble is when leaders get comfortable and stay too long. At this stage, people give you the bare minimum they show up, they do their tasks, but there&#8217;s no real energy behind it. They&#8217;re complying, not committing.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of a new manager walking into a team for the first time. For the first few weeks, people will do what she says simply because she&#8217;s now &#8220;the manager.&#8221; Not because they respect her yet they just haven&#8217;t decided either way.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re at this level, don&#8217;t panic. Use the time. Learn your people. Figure out who&#8217;s motivated by recognition, who needs autonomy, who&#8217;s quietly carrying more than their share. They remember small things like a team member&#8217;s kid&#8217;s school event, someone&#8217;s ongoing struggle with a difficult client, who prefers written feedback over being called out in a meeting. It sounds minor, but it isn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team lead who checks in on her people, actually listens when they raise a concern, and treats them like adults rather than resources; that&#8217;s Permission-level leadership in action. Her team doesn&#8217;t just work for her. They work with her.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to move here, the advice is almost embarrassingly simple: pay attention to people. Ask real questions. There&#8217;s momentum now. Problems get solved instead of just discussed. Targets get hit instead of explained away.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picture a department head who consistently comes through projects finish on time, numbers improve, fires get put out before they spread. People respect her because they can see the results, not because of her title or even because she&#8217;s likeable (though hopefully she is).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catch at this stage: don&#8217;t let results replace the relationship work from Level 2. Some leaders get so focused on output that they stop listening again. At People Development, your job shifts toward growing other leaders, mentoring, delegating real responsibility, and stepping back so someone else can step up.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxwell called this &#8220;reproduction,&#8221; and I think that&#8217;s the right word for it. A leader who only produces results themselves has a ceiling. A leader who creates other leaders doesn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think of the senior professionals I&#8217;ve worked with who spend real time not just a quick tip in passing, but actual time coaching a junior colleague through a difficult decision. Handing over something meaningful and letting the other person figure it out, even if it means watching them stumble a little first. That&#8217;s this level.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, this is the stage most leaders skip, not because they don&#8217;t want to, but because it&#8217;s slower and less visible than hitting your own targets. It&#8217;s worth doing anyway.
